Society Messages # 1 : Let It Be - The Beatles

"Let It Be"

The Beatles

When I find myself in times of trouble
Mother Mary comes to me
Speaking words of wisdom
Let it be

And in my hour of darkness
She is standing right in front of me
Speaking words of wisdom
Let it be

Let it be, let it be
Let it be, let it be
Whisper words of wisdom
Let it be

When all the broken hearted people
Living in the world agree
There will be an answer
Let it be

For though they may be parted there is
Still a chance that they will see
There will be an answer
Let it be

Let it be, let it be
Let it be, let it be
there will be an answer
Let it be

Let it be, let it be
Let it be, let it be
Whisper words of wisdom
Let it be
Let it be, let it be
Let it be, let it be
Whisper words of wisdom
Let it be

And when the night is cloudy
There is still a light that shines on me
Shine until tomorrow
Let it be
I wake up to the sound of music
Mother Mary comes to me
Whisper words of wisdom
Let it be

Let it be, let it be
Let it be, let it be
There will be an answer
Let it be
Let it be, let it be
Let it be, let it be
Whisper words of wisdom
Let it be

Analysis:

"Let It Be" by the Beatles uses an optimistic approach to address the problems of society, and describes the possible solutions. In the first verse, the speaker states that "Mother Mary" comes to him in "times of trouble", or adversity, and she tells him to "let it be". This image is repeated again in the second verse, and "Mother Mary" approached him in his "hour of darkness", or hard times where he felt at rock-bottom. He says that she is standing "right in front" of him, serving as an inspiration to "let it be", and optimistically be at peace with what happens in his life. In the chorus, the speaker says, "Whisper words of wisdom". These "words of wisdom" are the ones that were told to him by "Mother Mary", who inspired him to "let it be". Then, the speaker addresses society, singing, "When the broken-hearted people living in this world agree, there will be an answer". He is perhaps referring to all of the people in the world who have been split from a lover, in any way, and says that when they all agree to be optimistic and look at the bright side, there will be an answer to their problems. In the next verse, the speaker readdresses these people, and says that, "For though they have been parted there is still a chance that they will see, there will be an answer". The speaker is being hopeful, saying that if the broken-hearted people think optimistically and try not to dwell on their loss, they will find the answer that they need to move on. Throughout these messages to society, he repeats the phrase "let it be", and this repetition is to reiterate the optimistic message of the song, and to inspire listeners to think as "Mother Mary" inspired him to, and let things happen as they should.
